I shall start the State of Our Union by first of all saying that it is in pretty bad shape. Our legislature wants to spend our current budget surplus on either our own Social Security or on paying off our current national debt of $5,661,292,792,032.48 as of 8:55 on 10/12/99 or a combination of both. But they, the Republicans and the Democrats, can’t agree on what to do with it. I seriously think we need to split it down the middle and to both. We have to give up a piece of our own futures to secure our children’s future.
            There is also the business of our armed forces sticking their noses in on the business of other nations, such as Kosovo and Serbia. Sure the hate and violence needs to stop, but more violence on the behalf of a third party, NATO in this case, will not help them one bit. It just brings on more hate. We also are missing our “targets” in Kosovo and Serbia. We are instead “accidentally” hitting innocent farmers and civilians. Our bombs and violence is supposed to bring peace and security, but they bring only more hate, fear, oppression, and violence. Our troops are responsible for the deaths of hundreds of innocents. Although we now have stopped the bombings, we still have our troops in their country. Our President claims they are there for the Albanians safety. What about the safety of Serbs and neutral parties? . We have another Vietnam on our hands.
            There is also the current rash of hate crimes in our own country. They seem to be targeting minorities and gays. I can’t believe we still have racism and bigots in our country. We created the atomic bomb. We have split the nucleus of an atom and harvested its energy, but we can’t even stop the hate in our own country. I am no psychologist, so I don’t know what makes people hate each other. I only know that we can stop it by recognizing each other’s differences and accepting them for who they wish to be.
            In and of itself, our Union is in a state of disarray. We need to take the power back from the people who are supposed to be keeping it safe from corrupt hands. Those protective hands have become corrupt by the power they are supposed to be guarding and they need to be replaced by ones that can deal with it.
